On the weekend, we went out for our usual family breakfast – something we love to do. It's not every time that our teen daughter joins us, but on this particular morning, she decided to come along.
As I was at the counter, placing our order, the boys stuck to their usual choices – bacon & eggs, banana bread and hot chocolates.
Then I turned to my daughter and asked, “What would you like?”
She scanned the menu, then with a smile said, “Mum, they have fairy bread. Can I have it?”
My first thought was to say no, thinking, Fairy bread for breakfast? But then I paused and thought, Why not? So instead, I said, “Sure, why not!”
She looked surprised and asked again, “Really? You’re going to let me get it?” I smiled and said, “Sure!”
So, I ordered her fairy bread and a mango smoothie. When we sat down and the food arrived, her fairy bread made an entrance, causing her brothers to laugh and tease, “What teen orders fairy bread?”
But without missing a beat, she smiled and said, “I love fairy bread! I didn’t think you’d actually let me get it, Mum.”
Then, as she took a bite, she said, “I love fairy bread – remember all the times we used to make it together, Mum? I used to take it to school and look forward to eating it. Remember we used to look for new cookie cutters and sprinkles? That was our thing…”
And yes, it was our thing.
We created some truly special memories in the kitchen, making fairy bread together. There were always sprinkles everywhere and plenty of mess, but it was always so much fun. That moment at the café was a reminder of those little things that, at the time, felt simple, but created lasting memories.
For my teen, ordering fairy bread was more than just a breakfast choice – it was a memory of all the fun we had. And for me, it was a powerful reminder that the things we do with our children when they’re little do matter. Even when we think they might not notice or remember, they do.
This was especially meaningful for us because that small moment at the café reminded me that those little acts of connection, those joyful memories we create, stay with them – forever.
Please don’t stop sharing those little moments with your kids in the kitchen. Want to recreate some simple magic? Check out our fairy bread recipe here!
